Mother-of-pearl marquetry table tray – China, late 19th century
A magnificent oval tray in precious wood, richly decorated with finely inlaid mother-of-pearl marquetry. The decoration, of great finesse, shows two imperial dragons moving among celestial clouds at the centre of the composition — a traditional symbol of power, prosperity and protection.
Around this central scene unfolds abundant vegetation of lotus, peonies, bamboo and seasonal flowers, accompanied by delicately rendered birds. Each element is meticulously cut from mother-of-pearl, whose iridescent reflections vary with the light and animate the surface with a subtle glow.
Made at the end of the Qing dynasty, this tray bears witness to the refinement of Chinese workshops specialising in the decorative arts destined for notable houses and prestigious export.
Today it can be used as a table tray, a decorative wall tray, a gueridon top, or simply as a work of art in its own right.
A spectacular piece where the poetry of nature meets Chinese imperial symbolism, in a fascinating play of light and material.
