Asian antiques
This superb antique elm altar sideboard seduces with the extraordinary figuring of its wood, whose powerful, undulating grain evokes the movements of water or the ink landscapes of Chinese masters. Each panel is unique, revealing the natural beauty of wood carefully selected several generations ago.
Its four framed-panel doors, four front drawers and imposing brass and patinated-metal fittings illustrate the perfect balance between function and elegance proper to traditional Chinese furniture. The warm patina of the elm has acquired over time a depth and softness that only antique furniture can offer.
Once destined for notable houses or reception spaces, this piece naturally found its place beneath ancestor portraits or precious objects devoted to family worship. Today it becomes a centrepiece in a contemporary interior, bringing character, authenticity and serenity.
Its sober, architectural line lets it hold crockery and household linen as readily as a selection of art objects.
